John Kensinger on Education

I believe that a cornerstone to our economic recovery will be education. We need a two pronged approach for success. First, the re-education of our nation’s unemployed workers should be a priority. We need to abandon wasteful stimulus spending and bailouts. There is a principle: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. Education will provide the key to unlocking new opportunities for our nation’s unemployed workers.
Second, our children need the skills necessary to succeed in a high tech global economy. America spends more money on education than any of the other top 20 industrialized nations, but we rank in the bottom fifth in high school and college graduation rates. Currently, two thirds of our children aren’t able to pursue higher education without some type of remedial training.
The solution isn’t spending more money. The solution is tutoring students lacking academic skills so they can be successful. We need to eliminate waste from the education budget while setting aside 10% of the existing budget for local funding of tutoring programs in math, reading, and science. Local schools will have access to these funds if they choose to tutor students. Student needs will vary across the country, so the school districts not the federal government should determine how these funds are to be used. Any tutoring funds left over in the education budget will roll over to the next fiscal year. Implementation of a local program will involve the partnering of concerned parents and teachers. If our children are able to succeed in the classroom they will have the skills to succeed in life.
The Kensinger for Senate Committee is committed to providing our citizens with the economic tools and freedoms necessary to build America’s future. The American people are this nation’s greatest resource. It is the people, not the government, that hold the key to achieving greatness. If you believe in these principles, then we can use your help. Our committee will need volunteers for signature gathering and fund raising so we can bring our message to the American people.
