John Kensinger on Energy Independence

My Views

American energy independence is one of the keys to our economic security and prosperity. A two percent decrease in oil production by the OPEC countries translates into a 20% increase at the gas pump. Higher fuel prices translate into increased production, and transportation costs by businesses. This higher cost of doing business decreases the money available for employee wages and job creation.

Four dollar per gallon gasoline prices in 2008 helped contribute to the current economic recession. No group of foreign countries should have the ability to negatively impact our economy. Especially, countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Libya, and Iraq who support Islamic Militancy and hatred of our western culture. We need to protect our economy and jobs by pursuing energy independence. Our country should utilize coal reserves, and expand exploration of oil and natural gas while transitioning toward renewable energy from wind and solar power. The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, better known as the Cap-and-Trade Bill, should be eliminated.

The recession has shown us that when Americans have less money, they purchase fewer goods and services. Businesses then cut production and layoff workers. The Cap-and-Trade Bill will increase taxes on working families and businesses that are already suffering. Instead of creating new energy taxes we should provide a 5% tax cut to those businesses able to reduce their energy consumption. This will give businesses more money for job creation and expansion while improving our energy independence.
